Within just two years, Nick van de Wall (aka Afrojack) has become a major icon in the electronic dance music scene. From humble beginnings in his native Holland, Afrojack has grown into a multi-award winning, platinum-selling DJ, and music producer.
Already with two Grammys beneath his belt, an own record label Wall Recordings, and a consistent top-ten ranking in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ’s since 2011, Afrojack released his anticipated debut album Forget the World last year.
A pair of leather jeans. Who would have imagined that this would initiate a long-term collaboration? Two capsule collections and a pair of limited edition sunglasses later, Afrojack and G-Star RAW continue to unite their work.
Custom made for a tour, in his favoured G-Star RAW jeans fit known as the A-Crotch with its silhouette shape based on cowboys’ jeans with legs pitched for horse-riding – the leather jeans turned into more than a one-off. The starting point of the first G-Star RAW x Afrojack collaboration, in 2013, the leather A-Crotch was transformed into a six piece capsule collection.
A natural to the product development process, Afrojack’s creativity was quickly revealed to extend beyond music. Working alongside G-Star RAW’s garment engineers at their Amsterdam atelier, the collaboration brings out the DJ’s personal tastes – from the fabrics and graphics used, to the fit of the garments. The succeeding collection for Spring/Summer ’14 took this discovered talent a step further in the collaboration.
A larger collection, the original starting point was revisited in special summer versions of the A-Crotch – cut to a short and offered in various denims. A limited-edition pair of sunglasses followed with the DJ’s desire to go deeper into technical development. With lenses specially coated for a blue-mirror tint, the frames were made in Afrojack’s favourite finish of matte black.
Today the collaboration continues, with the next chapter yet to be revealed. Follow G-Star RAW to stay tuned.
