Last year the first G-Star Women Store was opened in Amsterdam by Doutzen Kroes. This week model and actress, Delfine Bafort opened the doors of the second G-Star Women in Ghent, Belgium.
G-Star Women is a specialized concept focusing on female denim craftsmanship with innovative fits. These vary from sculpted skinny fits to effortlessly elegant silhouettes with carefully designed details that reinforce the perfect fit.
In this interview Rebekka Bach - chief designer of the G-Star women’s collections - tells about her passion for denim, the inspirations behind the collection, the expertise of the design team, and ‘the magic of the back pockets’.
WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND G-STAR WOMEN?
‘G-Star Women offers denim specialism with a wide variety of well-tailored fits in a variation of denim fabrics. The concept is the result of years of experience from our skilled and creative design team. Utilising the G-Star DNA, I believe that with this store concept we offer women jeans in an environment that distinctive, cool and modern. Like our collections, it’s a store for metropolitan girls that are attracted to our unpolished character while portraying an ultra-feminine signature.’
WHAT INSPIRES THE DESIGN TEAM OF THE G-STAR WOMEN'S COLLECTION?
‘We have a fascination for classic menswear tailoring and the functionality of authentic workwear. We love to find the elegance in both raw and stylish masculine garments. We study and analyse the styles before we re-interpret them in a very feminine way. The result is a modern style we describe as raw elegance or utilitarian sophistication.’
AT THE G-STAR WOMEN STORE YOU OFFER A LARGE RANGE OF FITS AND STYLES
‘I believe that today women wear denim for all occasions. It’s the key to achieving a cool look and therefore we need many different fits in different fabrics. The fits in the G-Star Women store vary from super slim styles like the 3301 Jeg Skinny to loose, nonchalant silhouettes like the Arc Tapered or Type C.
Every style is the result of a precise study of the female body in combination with tailoring craftsmanship. A perfect pair of jeans is all about a perfect fit. That’s why we design every garment to the millimetre and every detail and stitch has a meaning.’
WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS DO YOU PREFER FOR THE WOMEN'S COLLECTIONS?
‘We love to find luxury in unexpected materials. For us high quality is not just about silk and cashmere. A pure indigo denim twill is just as valuable in our opinion. We also like to use denim fabrics with stretch that recover instantly when you move and have a lifting effect. I think our choice of fabrics is innovative and specialised. For every fit and style we make a well thought choice of materials regarding texture, direction of the weave, weight, the amount of stretch or the application of special washings and coatings.’
YOU ARE OFTEN REFERRING TO THE 'MAGIC OF THE BACK POCKETS'?
‘By placing pocket closer, straighter and higher – the bum can look smaller, lifted and more compact. This we call "the magic of the back pockets". For me it’s an essential ingredient of a flattering jean. We have done a comparable study on side seams. By moving these towards the front it's possible to visually manipulate the body shape, so legs can appear longer and slimmer. I call it denim craftsmanship, just like our 3D approach of shape.’
FOLLOWING AMSTERDAM, THE SECOND G-STAR WOMEN STORE IN GHENT JUST OPENED.
‘It is so cool that the complete image of the collection for women is now under one roof. It hosts a great choice in jeans, jackets, tops, knits, coats, shoes and accessories. In the near future we will also be opening G-Star Women stores in Rotterdam and Paris. The service in these G-Star Women stores features denim experts offering personal advise. My advice: the perfect pair of jeans is all about a perfect fit.
