Greencast Denim: A Deeper Shade of Indigo

responsive-image
Greencast denim is part of G-STAR’s DNA.
It traces back to early raw denim development, when color was driven by dye chemistry rather than surface finishing. Indigo layered over sulfur-dyed yarns created a subtle green undertone—not by design, but by process.

What is greencast denim?

Greencast denim is denim with a subtle green undertone, created by dyeing yarn with sulfur before applying indigo. The dyeing process defines the fabric. Not a finish, but a color built into the yarn. Made from cotton twill, the fabric gains its strength from the weave and its character from this layered dye construction. Over time, this became a hallmark of vintage workwear: denim that aged with depth, revealing olive and teal tones through wear.

Where brighter indigo pushes quickly toward high-contrast blues, greencast develops gradually in layers:
-High-wear areas shift into warmer, earthier tones
-Seams and edges reveal subtle teal highlights
-Creases retain depth, contrasting with softened, olive-tinted breaks

The result is less graphic, more nuanced. It is often associated with raw denim and vintage workwear due to its unique fading behavior. Every movement leaves a trace. Every wear builds character. No two pairs age the same. Greencast denim doesn’t fade. It unfolds.

How is greencast denim made?

Greencast denim gets it greenish tint from a two-step dye process. Yarn is first dyed with sulfur to create a green-toned base, then rope-dyed in indigo through repeated dipping and oxidation.

Because indigo sits on the outer layer of the yarn, it wears away over time—revealing the underlying greencast.

The Greencast shade is a signature G-STAR denim tone, indigo with a green undertone. Engineered to reveal its character over time.

What is the difference between greencast, bluecast and redcast denim?

Greencast, blue ast and redcast denim differ in their undertones, which shape how the fabric looks and fades over time. Greencast denim has a subtle olive hue and develops more muted, earthy fades. Bluecast denim appears brighter and fades into vivid blue tones, while redcast denim has a warmer tone, developing a richer, slightly reddish depth with wear.
