South Africa in Sound and Denim

responsive-image

As Jazz Week took over Cape Town, the city moved through a familiar rhythm of sound, movement and creative exchange. Against that backdrop, we entered the moment as a cultural partner, connecting with a new generation of South African artists shaping the future of jazz through their own visual and musical language. Across stages, rehearsals, and backstage spaces, denim became part of the conversation. Not simply worn, but used as a form of expression shaped through texture, sillhouette, and identity.

Cape Town in Motion

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival has long existed as more than a music event. It is a meeting point for creative disciplines, generations, and perspectives across South Africa and beyond. We stepped into that energy through collaboration, connecting with artists and communities shaping culture in real time. In Cape Town, the connection between jazz and denim felt natural, built through rhythm, improvisation, and individuality.

Sound, Rooted in South Africa

At the center of the week were artists like Nduduzo Makhathini and Zoe Modiga, whose work continues to redefine contemporary South African jazz. Both draw deeply from heritage and storytelling, pushing tradition into something still unfinished.
Makhathini's performances carry a spiritual intensity that feels both intimate and expansive, while Modiga's presence signals a new chapter in her own creative journey ahead of her latest release. Together they represent a generation of artists moving culture forward without losing sight of where it began.

Tuning into Denim

For us, the partnership extended beyond dressing performers for the stage. It became an exploration of how denim absorbs character over time and becomes a reflection of the individual wearing it.
Makhathini's self-styled looks combined pieces from Marc Newson and Archetypes capsules, bringing together sculptural sillhouettes, layered textures, and experimental proportions. The styling felt instinctive rather than constructed. A reflection of personal rhythm rather than performance costume. Throughout the week, denim carried a quiet presence. Functional, expressive, and shaped by the individuality of the people wearing it.
