Born in Norway in 1990, Magnus Carlsen is the world number one chess player and the highest ranked player in the history of the game. Long-time friend of the brand, our collaboration with Carlsen began in 2010 being photographed by Anton Corbijn as the face of our campaign. For the Spring/Summer ’14 season, he fronted our campaign once again, this time alongside Lily Cole in “The Challenge” – a thrilling metaphorical chess match.
Renowned for his confident and unpredictable style of chess-play, Carlsen embodies the spirit of unconventional thinking which lies at the heart of G-Star. A child prodigy, Carlsen became a grandmaster at the tender age of 13 and World Champion at the age of 22. In 2014, he again defeated Viswanathan Anand at the World Chess Championship in India to defend his title as World Champion.
“ Most people in the chess world find my collaboration with G-Star very interesting… “
As a teenager, his attacking playing style won him the respect of many established chess names, and his performance at the 2009 Nanjing Pearl Spring tournament has been described as one of the greatest in history.
His powerful performances continued and on January 1st 2010, Magnus became the youngest ever World Chess Number One — the first player from a western nation to reach the top of the rankings since Bobby Fischer in 1972.
Described as the ‘Mozart of Chess’, Carlsen continues to work closely with G-Star, most recently seen wearing the responsibility of big blue in support of the RAW for the Oceans project.
