What is greencast denim?
Greencast denim is denim with a subtle green undertone, created by dyeing yarn with sulfur before applying indigo. The dyeing process defines the fabric. Not a finish, but a color built into the yarn. Made from cotton twill, the fabric gains its strength from the weave and its character from this layered dye construction. Over time, this became a hallmark of vintage workwear: denim that aged with depth, revealing olive and teal tones through wear.
Where brighter indigo pushes quickly toward high-contrast blues, greencast develops gradually in layers:
- High-wear areas shift into warmer, earthier tones
- Seams and edges reveal subtle teal highlights
- Creases retain depth, contrasting with softened, olive-tinted breaks
The result is less graphic, more nuanced. It is often associated with raw denim and vintage workwear due to its unique fading behavior. Every movement leaves a trace. Every wear builds character. No two pairs age the same. Greencast denim doesn’t fade. It unfolds.
