ABOUT MARC

Originally from Australia, Marc Newson is one of the world’s leading designers. Having studied jewelry and sculpture at the Sydney College of the Arts, Marc’s breakthrough piece combined learning from both fields. The 1986 Lockheed Lounge chair presented a "fluid metallic form, like a giant blob of mercury," crafted into the shape of a chaise-longue through the application of hundreds of aluminum panels onto a home-made fiberglass mould. The resulting piece was exhibited at a Sydney gallery and featured in photographic articles all over the world. In 2010 one of the Lockheed Lounge chairs was sold at auction for $2.1M - the highest price ever paid for a work by a living designer.

Marc went on to live in Tokyo and Paris, soaking up the design aesthetic of both cultures, before making his permanent base in London. Over the past two decades, he has designed objects for some of the leading companies in the world, including: the 021C concept car for the Ford Motor Company; the Riva Aquariva speedboat; aircraft interiors for Qantas including the A380, the first class lounges at Sydney and Melbourne Airports and the Lever house restaurant in New York.

Since 2003, Marc has also collaborated with G-Star on a number of clothing collections. Applying industrial design techniques to leisure wear, he has created unique ranges that feature hidden seams, one piece arms and clean, structured silhouettes, as well as distinctive materials that take familiar patterns, such as army camouflage, and re-imagining them in more basic, naive shapes and colours.
